Our Preschool is unique in that it offers the students a continuity of care model with classrooms that offer continuous care for all preschool students.

What is Continuity of Care?
Continuity of care means that children and teachers remain together for more than one year.  Children and teachers remain together in a multi-age classroom.  This important for students learning because it provides a sense of stability for young children.  When a child's psychological needs are met, good psychological development and high achievement are most likely to occur.  (Excerpted from Theilheimer, R. (2006). Molding to the children: Primary care giving and continuity of care. Zero to Three, 26, 3.)

Parent Communication and Partnership
Keeping our families involved with the school has always been a priority of ours.  In order to help keep families informed Shining Stars uses the Tadpoles communication tool.  The Tadpoles program allows our teachers to capture special moments, take photos and videos of your child actively learning as well as send you classroom information in real time.

Shining Star Curriculum
At Shining Stars we believe that children learn best through experience and exploration as well as through relationships with peers and adults. Our teachers plan each lesson with both teacher and child initiated content that allows for flexibility and for children to further explore interest areas. These lessons are planned with the intent to intentionally scaffold on the child’s natural curiosity and provide guidance for them to develop critical thinking and reasoning skills as well as the ability to resolve conflicts as they arise.

Your child’s daily routine will consist of circle time, small- and large-group times, greeting time, rest time, snack/lunch, and outside times.

Our curriculum aligns with the Arizona Early Learning Standards. These standards cover a broad range of skill development and provide a useful instructional foundation for children from diverse backgrounds and with diverse abilities.

Our curriculum content consists of eight areas of concentration, socio-emotional development, language and literacy, mathematics, science, social-studies, physical and health & safety, and fine arts, with the focus of technology integrated with-in each concentration area.  Teachers plan curricular activities to teach content in ways that respect the developmental stages of the children in the classroom. Theories and curriculum strategies are dynamic and grow according to research based best teaching practices.

Assessments
No curriculum is complete without authentic assessment.  In our program, we use a system of ongoing assessment that answers your questions about how your child is learning. Teaching Strategies GOLD® online helps us plan for each child and ensure that every child is making progress. We know how important these early years are to children’s success in school and in life. Like you, we want to do everything we can to give your child a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

In addition to Teaching Strategies Gold your child will receive their SAIS number.  This will ensure continuity for your child’s progress beyond Shining Stars.
Social and Emotional Development
Social development - Preschool children learn to share, cooperate, take turns, compromise, and negotiate so they play and get along with each other. Social skills that are developed in early childhood will support children in their school, work, family, and community lives. (The Deveoux Foundation, 1999)
Emotional Development - Preschoolers also have strong emotions – excitement, fear, happiness and anger, to name a few. They learn the words that describe feelings and how to express then in ways that are accepted by their family, culture, and community. (The Deveoux Foundation, 1999)
Shining Stars uses the CSEFEL model in our preschool classroom.  This is a research based social emotional curriculum specifically designed to nurture students’ social emotional development and provide them with tools for problem solving in real world situations.

Mathematics
Children use their senses to construct knowledge of mathematical concepts through interactions with real objects and events and through their daily observations. Our teachers plan developmentally appropriate math experiences activities and play that are designed to teach the following concepts:

- Number sense and operations
- Data Analysis
- Patterns
- Geometry
- Measurement
- Structure and Logic

Language and Literacy - Children develop new skill, knowledge and the ability to acquire and process new information through play and interactions with peer, adults and their environment.
Shining Stars uses a blended instruction approach to early language and literacy development. This approach consists of two components, Emergent Literacy and Scientifically Based Reading Research.

Emergent Literacy consists of developmentally appropriate activities that promote learning early literacy through:

- Print-rich classrooms
- Storybook reading
- Shared reading and writing activities
- Projects and thematic units
- Opportunities to engage in meaningful reading and writing activities
SBRR (Scientifically Based Reading Research) consists of targeted instruction that helps all children learn necessary literacy skills. This instruction is centered on five primary early literacy concepts;

- Oral language
- Phonological awareness
- Alphabet knowledge
- Concepts about print
- Opportunities to practice these skills

Physical Development, Health & Safety
Our curriculum is designed to develop higher-order thinking skills necessary for future social and academic success as they explore, combine and define their physical movements.

Our teachers guide students in thoughtfully planned movement experiences with vigorous outdoor and indoor activities that incorporate both gross and fine motor skill development as part of our daily routines.

At Shining Stars we model and teach healthy living practices and the importance of good hygiene, a healthy diet and the need for exercise and rest.

In addition to our daily physical development routine our children participate in the Stretch-N-Grow® Physical Education Program.  Each week students, participate in Stretch-N-Grow® class with a Certified Youth Fitness Instructor.

Each class incorporates the basics of exercise, warm-up, endurance, floor exercise, stretching, and cool-down as well as dynamic discussion on health related topics, including exercise, nutrition, self-esteem, safety and muscle recognition.
